Police urged to act over Hillsong claims

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie says NSW police must “act today” after a new podcast raised serious allegations about a Hillsong institution.

News Corp Australia’s new podcast ‘Faith on Trial’ contains allegations from five different women that young, female students at the college were taught to physically “submit” to their husbands.

They also detailed a practice whereby they were made to disclose their entire sexual history to their classmates.

Mr Wilkie, who has previously heard similar testimony from a whistleblower, said the allegations were nothing short of “shocking” and demanded immediate action.

“If these allegations are found to be correct, then this is misconduct within the Hillsong church of unspeakable proportions,” he said.

“Clearly we need to test them.”

He told reporters on Sunday morning that he had been in contact with the NSW Police commissioner, but had been told they could not launch an investigation unless a whistleblower started the process.

“It’s like expecting a dead person to say (to police) they’ve been murdered,” he said.

“I’m calling on NSW police to take these allegations seriously.

“NSW police have to initiate their own investigation … they must act today.

“This (alleged) pattern of behaviour should concern us. These are serious allegations on the table – that adult women are being ordered to be raped.

“NSW Police need to today get on the front foot. Conduct an investigation and make sure there is no evil in Hillsong church.”

In a statement, NSW Police said they were aware of the matter.

“The NSW Police Force recently received correspondence which has been referred to The Hills Police Area Command for assessment,” they said.

“Anyone who wishes to report a crime should contact their local police, while information relating to suspected criminal activity can be provided to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
