Nelson Mandela Square debuts an immersive art exhibition

Urban Echoes, a brand-new art exhibition, has just opened at the Nelson Mandela Square and promises to engulf viewers with a mesmerising blend of iconic sculptures, bright colour and captivating artistic expressions.

JOHANNESBURG – Nelson Mandela Square, a well-known shopping and dining destination, is luring art lovers with yet another reason to visit the well-liked square. There are more than 70 exclusive shops and restaurants in Nelson Mandela Square, many of which are one-of-a-kind in the nation.

Urban Echoes, a brand-new art exhibition, has just opened in the Square and promises to engulf viewers with a mesmerising blend of iconic sculptures, bright colour and captivating artistic expressions.

The Colossal show, which included over 20 sculptures and was created by sculptor Anton Smit, is enhanced by the Urban Echoes collection. The majority of the sculptures from the Colossal exhibition are still on display.

It will be possible to visit the Urban Echoes exhibition at Nelson Mandela Square through 2024 thanks to a partnership with Artyli. The exhibition can be viewed for free.

Brian Unsted, the asset manager of Nelson Mandela Square, said: “We’re thrilled to have the Urban Echoes Exhibition here. Anton Smit and Mars’s remarkable collaboration brings elegance and sophistication, complementing the Square’s splendid ambiance,” Unsted continued.

It is a first for Johannesburg and the country and was created by famous sculptor Anton Smit in association with graffiti artist George Kalapov “Mars” and Artyli Gallery.

Imagine a painting that was created by combining eight enormous heads, each measuring three metres high. The sculptures are transformed into painted landscapes depending on the viewer’s angle, which modifies the individually painted heads to mimic Johannesburg’s urban fabric.

When taken as a whole, the finished collection resembles a sizable mural portraying “Life in Jo’burg” in a never-before-seen fashion.
