MLB Roundup: Paredes hits grand slam as Rays improve to 7-0; Cubs' Stroman shines

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Isaac Paredes hit a grand slam during Tampa Bay’s six-run second inning, and Rays beat the Oakland Athletics 9-5 on Friday night to extend their season-opening win streak to seven games.

The Rays are the first major league team to win each of their first seven games by four or more runs since the 1884 St. Louis Maroons of the Union Association, according to STATS LLC. The Maroons’ season-opening stretch went 13 games. No other big league team has had a run of more than four.

Harold Ramirez, Manuel Margot, Christian Bethancourt and Wander Franco also homered for Tampa Bay. Zach Eflin (2-0) gave up three runs over six innings.

Ryan Noda and Shea Langeliers connected for Oakland. Ken Waldichuk (0-2) got the loss.

ATLANTA (AP) — Nelson Cruz had three hits and two RBIs, and San Diego got strong relief pitching in a victory at Atlanta.

Xander Bogaerts put the Padres ahead to stay with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning.

San Diego began the day with a 5.84 bullpen ERA, third-highest in the majors. But Brent Honeywell (1-0), Luis Garcia and Josh Hader shut out Atlanta over the last 4 1/3 innings.

Hader celebrated his 29th birthday with his second save of the season, striking out two in the ninth.

Austin Riley went 3 for 3 for Atlanta, which dropped to 6-2. Michael Tonkin (0-1) got the loss.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Julio Rodriguez, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, hit a tiebreaking two-run homer to help Seattle spoil Cleveland’s home opener.

Rodriguez connected in the sixth inning for the Mariners, who rallied from a 3-0 deficit in their first road game. The 22-year-old Rodriguez hit 28 homers last season while helping Seattle end its 20-year playoff drought.

J.P. Crawford had a pair of RBI doubles off Aaron Civale (1-1) for Seattle, which dropped three of four to Cleveland at home last week.

Penn Murfee (1-1) got three outs for the win. Paul Sewald worked the ninth for his first save.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brandon Woodruff pitched four-hit ball into the sixth inning, and Milwaukee earned its sixth straight win.

Willy Adames hit a solo homer for the Brewers, and rookie Garrett Mitchell collected two more hits. Christian Yelich had a run-scoring groundout.

Woodruff (1-0) struck out four and walked two in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander improved to 9-1 in his last 20 starts dating to last season.

St. Louis right-hander Jack Flaherty (1-1) allowed two runs and four hits in five innings. He walked six and struck out three in his 100th big league start.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Ramon Urias hit a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning, then made a sparkling play at third base in the eighth to help Baltimore to the win in its home opener.

Ron Marinaccio (0-1) allowed a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh to Ryan Mountcastle, who stole second when Gunnar Henderson took a called third strike. Jimmy Cordero then took the mound and threw a wild pitch before allowing Urias’ double that made it 6-5.

Urias later scored on Cordero’s second wild pitch of the inning.

After New York pulled back within a run in the eighth, Urias fielded a hard grounder for a 5-3 double play.

Cionel Perez (1-0) got the win, and Felix Bautista pitched a hitless ninth for his third save.

PHOENIX (AP) — Evan Longoria and rookie Corbin Carroll hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning off Clayton Kershaw, lifting Arizona to the win.

Kershaw took a 3-2 lead into the sixth but Longoria launched a low breaking ball into the seats in left-center. Carroll then turned on an inside fastball, giving Arizona a 4-3 lead with a drive over Chase Field’s pool in right-center.

Arizona’s Drey Jameson (2-0), Miguel Castro and Andrew Chafin combined to pitch 4 1/3 innings of hitless relief.

James Outman and Chris Taylor homered for the Dodgers. Kershaw (1-1) gave up four runs over six innings.
