The Jaguars have been on the clock for months, but with a little more than a week to go before the 2022 NFL Draft begins, they don’t know who they’re going to pick No. 1 overall.
Peter Schrager reported in his latest mock draft for NFL.com that the Jaguars’ decision for the selection “is far from made.” Michigan pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson has been considered a favorite to go first, but Schrager had Georgia’s Travon Walker at the top of his mock draft.
The Jaguars’ decision could have a domino effect on the Jets and Giants, who each have two picks in the top 10. The Jets currently own the Nos. 4 and 10 picks, while the Giants possess the Nos. 5 and 7 selections. Kayvon Thibodeaux is another edge rusher expected to go high, and there could be as many as three offensive tackles taken in the top 10 between Ikem Ekwonu, Evan Neal and Charles Cross.
Jacksonville is coming off a nightmare 3-14 season in which their Urban Meyer experiment blew up in their face. He was fired after 13 games following a series of ignominious missteps, including not traveling home with the team from Cincinnati and being caught on video dancing with a woman who wasn’t his wife at a bar in Columbus. After multiple reports of strife between Meyer and his players and staff, the last straw appeared to be former kicker Josh Lambo telling the Tampa Bay Times Meyer kicked him during a practice.
This is the second straight year the Jaguars have the No. 1 pick after taking quarterback Trevor Lawrence in 2021. The 22-year-old had 3,641 yards, 12 touchdowns and 17 interceptions as a rookie.
