Desperate search for missing teen couple

Families and police are desperately searching for a teenage couple who were last seen at a train station and headed for the city.

A pair of New York families are desperately searching for a teenage couple who were last seen at a train station and headed for Manhattan, police said.

Kaileigh Catalano and her boyfriend Vincent Abolafia, both 15 and from Manorville, intended to hop on a 3.11pm train from Ronkonkoma to the Big Apple on Thursday, according to Suffolk County police.

The teens, who were both reported missing later that evening, may have been spotted together in Times Square, investigators said via the New York Post.

Another student from Eastport-South Manor Junior-Senior High School dropped the pair off at the train station, Kaileigh’s mum, Ehrin Catalano, told the Post on Monday.

“And they’ve been in the city since,” Ms Catalano said. “And they do not have their phones.”

Ms Catalano said she believes the teens – who have been dating since September – are “definitely still together” but their exact whereabouts remained unclear midday on Monday.

Days earlier, Kaileigh was spotted trying to buy a ticket at the Port Authority Bus Terminal but was denied by an employee who later said they recognised her because the teen didn’t have her vaccination card, her mother said.

“We have no idea,” Ms Catalano said of where the teens could be. “Neither of them left bad notes at home and we have no idea where they could be going.”

Kaileigh was also spotted at a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant in Times Square, Ms Catalano said, adding that neither her daughter nor Vincent had ever left home unannounced before.

“Absolutely not,” she said. “They’re two 15-year-old naive kids and my daughter does not know the city well – and they’re babies.”

Suffolk County cops were getting “a lot of calls” regarding the teens as they remained missing midday on Monday, a Suffolk County police Detective told the Post.

Reports of Kaileigh and Vincent being spotted in Times Square could not be verified, the detective said, adding it appears the pair ran away and left their Manorville homes voluntarily.

“They might not even realise that we’re looking for them at this point,” the detective said.

Suffolk County cops were co-ordinating on Monday with NYPD officials in the ongoing search. A department spokeswoman, meanwhile, said she no additional information to release.

Kaileigh, who was last seen wearing a black “Lil Peep” sweatshirt and black sweatpants, finished her day at school on Thursday and took an after-class session before she disappeared, according to Ehrin Catalano’s partner, Melissa Panasci.

“This makes no sense to any of us as to why she would go and leave,” Ms Panasci told the Post. “We’re completed blindsided.”

Kaileigh, a sophomore, is on her school’s varsity cheerleading team, while Vincent is a freshman. Neither teen was a known drug user or had prior disciplinary problems at home or in school, Ms Panasci said.

“At this point, we’re assuming they wanted to leave and play in the city and have a good time, but this has turned into them not coming back,” Ms Panasci said. “Nobody can find these kids.”

The weekend before the couple disappeared, they took in the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center with Vincent’s family, Ms Panasci said.

It’s possible the pair later decided to go back to Manhattan, saying “Let’s go do this,” Ms Panasci surmised.

Still, doing so without sharing their intentions was “completely out of character” for the teens, she said.

“Something’s wrong and they’re not coming home,” Ms Panasci said. “We’re panicking.”

Vincent’s stepfather, meanwhile, told Fox News the “amazing kid” had not recently argued with his family and had no acquaintances in Manhattan. But he and Kaileigh may have access to about $1200 in cash, his stepfather said on Sunday.

“Their family loves them and misses them, and all we want is for them to come home safe,” James Bonasia told Fox News.

The friend who took the pair to the train station on Thursday also told Kaileigh’s mother the couple planned to check out the Rockefeller Center tree again, Ms Catalano told Fox News.

Vincent Abolafia was described by police as 5 feet 3 inches (160cm) tall, weighing 110 pounds (49kg) with brown hair and brown eyes. Kaileigh Catalano is 5 feet tall (152cm), weighs 118 pounds (53kg) with brown hair and brown eyes.
