Vipin Sharma, Senior Product and Research Manager at Fixderma India Pvt Ltd:
Acne prone skin is one of the most sensitive skin type. They are prone to season, allergies and even flare up with wrong skincare routine. Here are some skincare mistakes that can cause acne:
Not paying attention to labels
Acne prone skin should always pick up products which are oil-free and non-comedogenic. Else the products can clog the pores, increase sebum production hence lead to acne.
Exfoliation is important. But over exfoliation can do more harm than one can imagine. Acne prone skin should stay away from physical scrub as they can cause micro tears and sensitize the skin. Chemical exfoliation; AHA, BHA based products are the most preferred choices and shouldn’t be used more than twice a week. Concentration of AHA/BHA should be as per the recommendation of dermatologist.
Over cleansing can lead to over drying of skin stripping it of the natural moisturizer. The cleanser should be the right kind. Use salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide based cleanser to prevent acne.
Avoiding moisturizer and using incorrect moisturizer
Heavy and oil based moisturizer can clog pores and flare up acne. Acne prone skin should always use light weight, oil-free and gel based moisturizers. And remember! Even oily, acne prone skin needs moisturizer but just the right type.
Not removing makeup properly
Clogged and infected pores are the biggest factors behind acne-flare ups. Post makeup, one should double cleanse the skin to ensure removal of even the last trace of makeup.
Acne prone skin may find sunscreen goopy and heavy but avoiding sun protection can lead to sun damage and heat sensitivity. Sun exposure can dry your skin out and then skin may over compensate by ramping up oil production. This can lead to oily and greasy skin which can lead to clogged pores and hence acne.

There are few beauty myths that most grow up believing like that acne only happens to teenagers, but it’s also commonly seen in adults. Those breakouts seen on your face or neck are basically due to excess sebum (skin oil production) topped up with blockage of your hair follicles and inflammation. Now there might be certain factors triggering your acne.
With the current trends of lifestyle common causes of acne include –
Hormonal fluctuations – which stimulates your sebacaeous glands to produce excess oil resulting in breakouts. These could occur due to change in your hormones just before or during your monthly periods or on starting or stopping a birth control pill. PCOS – commonly seen in girls these days is another hormonal cause of acne
Stress & lack of sleep can over produce androgens in your body which triggers inflamed acne which in turn would cause more stress. So it’s always better to take it a little easy!
Diet – Not everyone has diet related acne. But watch out if food with high sugar load, milk or fried food is aggravating your pimples and try to cut out on those
Bacteria harboring on your phone screen or pillow cases or dirty make up brushes gives rise to acne on one side of your face and over the chin. Make sure you don’t only cleanse your face but also the phone screen and change your make up brushes time to time
Using the wrong skin care products or using too many products is something that could be giving your breakouts too.
Treatment for your acne would depend on the severity and you would require prescription based therapy from your dermatologist. Retinoids, antibiotics, azelaic acid or some hormonal medications would be given by them. But some measures you can take at home to curb those breakouts would be using a foaming cleanser and opting for a salicylic acid serum in the mornings such as the acne corrector which unclogs your pores and top it up with a niacinamide based moisturizer and good SPF. Night time you can go in for a Retinol serum which works great for acne and acne marks too!
Apart from that go in for certain procedures like acne peels and carbon laser toning time to time
