It’s the start of a busy time for PGA Tour superstar Tiger Woods, but he won’t return to action quite yet when the 2022 Hero World Challenge tees off at Albany Golf Course. Woods is the host of the invitational tournament in The Bahamas that benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation and features 20 top PGA Tour golfers. The 15-time major champion was expected to be one of those golfers, but he had to withdraw Monday, citing plantar fasciitis that cropped up in practice rounds. He still plans to compete in The Match on Dec. 10 and the PNC Championship from Dec. 17-18, alongside son Charlie. Woods played the three majors last season and most recently competed at The Open Championship in June. He will welcome a Hero World Challenge 2022 field that features six of the world’s top 10 golfers, led by second-ranked Scottie Scheffler. The 2022 Masters champion will be joined by U.S. Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick and PGA champ Justin Thomas. Also scheduled to compete are stars like Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau and defending champion Viktor Hovland.
Rahm has played this event twice, winning in 2018 and finishing second the following year, which is why he is the 5-1 favorite in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2022 Hero World Challenge odds. Among the other top contenders in the Hero World Challenge 2022 field are Scheffler (8-1), Finau (9-1) and Xander Schauffele (10-1), with Hovland (12-1) and Thomas (12-1) right behind. The quality of the field means more than a dozen players are priced 20-1 or shorter. Before locking in any 2022 Hero World Challenge picks or golf bets, you need to see the PGA Tour predictions, best bets and sleeper picks from SportsLine golf insider Patrick McDonald.
After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.
He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.
McDonald is having a profitable 2022-23 season in every category, and he nailed this month’s Houston Open, backing Finau at 25-1. The expert has been on the money on his matchup plays and cashed in huge on Brendan Steele (80-1) as the first-round leader at the Zozo Championship. Anyone who followed McDonald’s advice has cashed in huge.
Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Hero World Challenge field and is locking in his best bets, best value and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions.
Top 2022 Hero World Challenge expert picks
Surprisingly, McDonald is fading Sam Burns (16-1), even though the 26-year-old tied for third last year in Albany. He also won three tournaments in 2021-22 but hasn’t played well since his Charles Schwab victory in May. He tied for fourth in his next outing, the Canadian Open, but has posted just one top-10 finish since then. That was a tie for seventh at the CJ Cup, thanks to a hot putter, and he withdrew from his last outing at the Houston Open. He hit four of 13 fairways and six of 18 greens in a first-round 77 there, and his putting isn’t good enough to survive that.
On the other hand, Rahm has been one of the best ball strikers on the tour for the past few years, and that’s why he is the favorite on this course. Past Hero winners like Hideki Matsuyama and Rickie Fowler “were terrific strikers of the golf ball at the time of their triumph,” McDonald says, and Rahm has finished in the top 10 in strokes gained total and greens in regulation the past two seasons. The Spaniard also has two DP World Tour victories since the Tour Championship, including his last outing, and has finished in the top five in his two other appearances.
